New or New-ISH Truck . . .

Recommended Posts

I drove a new Chevy 3/4 ton diesel with the Allison 6-speed automatic from Calgary to Columbus Miss. last year. That thing kicked ass like I have never seen in a truck before. The fuel efficiency was surprising as well. If I was getting a Chevy I would spring for the better seat; standard issue was a bit disappointing on a long ride.

Did you blow up Didgy *already*?

No - she's getting a little old though, I'd rather get something newer and more fuel efficient, save the money on the gas and have a nicer(newer) truck.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Well, lacking specifics, I'll provide some details based on what I've driven and read about.

Small/Mid-size:
Toyota Tacoma or Dodge Dakota/Mitsu Raider (w/V8).

Full size:
Much harder to decide because these things get purpose built. Do you want a diesel engine? If so, you have to step up in class and your choices are American only (American trucks are good quality though, better than the car line-up).

Car and Driver just named the GMC/Chevy Silverado (1500) as a Best 5 Truck.

Dodge uses the Cummins line of Diesel engines which are known for outstanding longevity.

Ford is known for build quality and towing capacities that are usually higher than their competition. Plus, they have a V-10 engine option.

What's your budget? You can get a full-size truck with a V-6 for under $20K, or you can get a full-size dually for $50K...

Dodge and Ford have next-gen Ram and F-150s coming out later this year.

Ford F-150s are really quiet...I mean wow. The Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi is pretty nice too.

The Toyota Tundra is a real looker, my cousin has a loaded Tundra and absolutely loves it. He couldn't get rid of his Chevy truck soon enough to get it. He has no regrets.

If it were me, I'd be looking at a Ford, Dodge or Toyota.

Definately have to be a full size. I got used to this one and Love it. i like how high up the driver sits. The view in traffic is so much better than a car.

At the moment I have a 98 Dodge 1500 4x4 . . . and the 4x4 has gotten me and several vehicles unstuck. The old Girl even unstuck a 1/2 full concrete truck once. I was so proud. BUT I'm not sure if I can heave the added expense.

I would keep her but the gas milage is around 12 - 13 city & 15 -16 hwy.

If I can get about 3 MPG better on both - I can justify with the miles that I drive a newer truck maybe even a new truck.

Car and Driver just named the GMC/Chevy Silverado (1500) as a Best 5 Truck. (Yeah - but that award is a pretty much "Pay as you go" in my opinion.)

Dodge uses the Cummins line of Diesel engines which are known for outstanding longevity. (Yeah - but you need to go to a 2500 - probably can't justify that one yet)

Ford is known for build quality and towing capacities that are usually higher than their competition. Plus, they have a V-10 engine option. (Not sure I need THAT much power)

What's your budget? (Probably in the 25K range including TTL)

You can get a full-size truck with a V-6 for under $20K, or you can get a full-size dually for $50K... (V-6 sounds so . . . Whimpy:D:P)

(Really - hmmmmm - B| - I'll have to look into that . . . do they come in green?)

Ford F-150s are really quiet...I mean wow. (Hmmm - not really a big Ford Fan . . . But I won't rule them out just yet . . . They sit pretty low though)

The Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi is pretty nice too.

The Toyota Tundra is a real looker, (I have a friend that bought one - he likes it too.)

If it were me, I'd be looking at a Ford, Dodge or Toyota.

If you're looking for gas mileage, you definitely don't want to go with the V-10...don't know about the mileage on the Hemi.

Evidently, getting 20mpg or so unloaded out of the CTD isn't all that uncommon. Plain vanilla longbed quad cab 2500 ST with the CTD is showing 40k retail on the Dodge website.

I've driven full sized pick-ups since the mid 70's. First was a 71 Dodge D-100 (10MPG with a hot-rodded 383), then a 78 F-100 (15MPG 300" 6-cyl), then an 84 F-150 (14MPG gutless 302). Now I have an '04 Chevy Colorado. Yea, I know it's not "full size" but boy is it spacious inside. I didn't option it for MPG, but even with the 220HP 3.5l engine, auto trans 4WD, & 3.73:1 gears I manage to get 17+ winter, 18+ summer & 25+ highway. I can make the 1275 mile run to my honey's in Arkansas straight through & my back & butt don't hurt!!!

Keep your foot out of it and you should do ok - I'd put a good quality synthetic in it (like Redline or Royal Purple) after the 3k break-in period, though...
